Mindfulness Meditation

Two years ago, I was introduced to Mindfulness meditation from one of my students and his mother.  It was a stressful time as we separated from the Sports Institute that we had partnered with for three years.  It was a breakup and it was painful for myself and the students.  I have never spoken about this to anyone but close friends and family, until now.

Early in my teaching career,  hen I taught severely emotionally disturbed children, I had the ability to block out anything that they said or did in anger.  It was a well tuned skill to be able to do that, but I knew that whatever they were going through, had nothing to do with me.  In other words, I did not take it personally.  So why, when we are hurt, do we take it so personally?  You hear the phrase all the time, “It’s not personal, it’s business.”  Yet, the breakup of a business relationship can be as hurtful and painful as a personal relationship.  In order to get through these stressful times, I turned to Mindfulness Meditation.  It helped beyond belief to center and focus myself to get beyond the hurt.

Recently, I found a New York Times article written about this practice and I wanted to share it here with you.
